Standing Almost everything on this page is #claude-synthesis — derived in conversation, not independently verified, and not yet vault canon. It makes strong claims about practices that many people find valuable, on the basis of a framework that has not been tested. See Epistemic Status. Treat as a hypothesis worth checking, not as advice.

Overview

Contemplative attainments are a problem case for Thresholds because they produce phenomenology that resembles later structures while, in several cases, removing the conditions that make progression possible.

The central claim: refining a mechanism to its limit can counterfeit the phenomenology of the next structure without acquiring that structure’s mechanism. Contemplative attainment is the clearest instance, but the pattern is general and belongs with other apparent structural skips.

Abiding Centerlessness as Terminal Splitting

Late Detached Splitting is arbitrarily fine-grained — the candy wrapper is gone, a stranger’s look is gone. Mastery means deliberate, precise allocation of what is included in awareness.

At that level of refinement there is one object left to split: the splitter.

This is what abiding centerlessness is, structurally — not a transcendence of the Detached mechanism but its terminal application. Awareness stops collapsing onto a point, but not because it expanded; because the point it was collapsing toward has been split off. Panoramic awareness by subtraction rather than by expansion.

The result mimics Psychotic awareness closely enough to be mistaken for it, and mimics Seminal detachment from the Big Other closely enough to be mistaken for that too. In dimensional terms: a dimensionless point has no location, which feels like having transcended location. It has not. It is still 0D. Compare Singularity — the point to which everything collapses is a Detached preoccupation, not a later one.

Why the mechanism is not acquired

Per the awareness hypothesis in Progression: Foreclosure does not cause awareness to expand; sustaining expanded awareness is what makes Foreclosure necessary. The mechanism is called forth by a problem — objects persist in awareness and must be marked “this exists in my awareness but is not mine.” That marking is the basis of intersubjective contact.

Centerlessness dissolves the ownership problem rather than solving it. Nothing is marked “mine,” but not because it has been assigned elsewhere — because the assigning function has been decommissioned. The practitioner reaches the phenomenological prerequisite for Psychotic structure by a route that removes the exact pressure that would install its mechanism.

Why the DerealizationBipolar bridge fails

The Derealization note identifies the bridge precisely: an accidental experience of wholeness, often during a moment of letting go of conscious splitting, and the taste of “all is one” proving intoxicating.

The intoxication is the engine, not the unity experience. Insight practice is the technology for having unity experiences without being intoxicated by them — the vipassanā-upakkilesā, the “corruptions of insight,” name luminosity and rapture as obstacles rather than attainments. The springboard fires repeatedly and there is nothing on the far side of it.

There is a second, deeper failure at the level of Progression generally. Structural movement requires strategic exhaustion, which has two ingredients: outcomes you want, and a strategy that fails to get them. Abiding equanimity removes outcomes you want. No wanting, no failure signal, no debug pressure.

Why it is especially adhesive for Detached structure

Detached individuals identify with the Ego-ideal and perform an ideal self while knowing it to be a fiction — which is why masking is exhausting. Centerlessness is an elegant exit: if there is no one to be, the ego-ideal’s fictionality stops hurting.

It is genuinely therapeutic, and that is precisely why it arrests. It resolves the Detached person’s suffering without resolving their structure.

Note the trap version: an ego-ideal whose content is “there is no one to be” can never be falsified by failing to be someone. It is the most airtight Ego-ideal available. Wielded, centerlessness is a tool; inhabited, it is the Detached compromise formation with perfect content.

Two Families of Practice

The Derealization note currently lists “Transformative practices: Meditation, psychedelics, etc.” as a single supporting factor. This should be split. Same category, opposite structural effect.

Criteria for a unity-inducing (pro-transition) practice

Derived from the Bipolar note’s account of why that phase is so intense, plus the Derealization bridge:

  1. Exceeds splitting bandwidth. The experience must be too big to fragment — by saturation, or by having no seams to split along.
  2. Supplies an Other. The transition is not toward “unity” abstractly but toward the Big Other as something to attach to codependently. A oneness with nobody does not install that relation.
  3. Leaves a residue of wanting. Craving to return is the springboard. A practice that terminates craving removes its own transitional value.

A practice is pro-transition to the degree it satisfies all three. Criterion 2 is the one most often missing and the one that matters most.

The families

FamilyExamplesCriteria metEffect
Devotional / bhaktiKirtan, nembutsu (Pure Land), dhikr, Sikh simran, charismatic worship, guru yoga, Hasidic dveikut1, 2, 3Strongly pro-transition
Collective / ecstaticWhirling, ecstatic dance, breathwork, drumming trance, congregational singing1, 2Pro-transition
Absorption / concentrationJhāna (esp. 1st–3rd), kasiṇa, mantra recitation1, 3Pro-transition, container-dependent
Surrender frameworksTwelve-step, conversion, novitiate2, 3Pro-transition
EmpathogensMDMA1, 2, 3Strongly pro-transition
RelationalMetta / karuṇā, falling in love, new parenthood2, 3Pro-transition
Dry insightAnatta-focused vipassanā, noting practice, secular mindfulnessAnti-transition
Self-inquiry / apophaticAdvaita “who am I”, Dzogchen, Cloud of Unknowing, Eckhart’s abgeschiedenheit1 onlyStrongly anti-transition
Dissolutive psychedelics5-MeO-DMT, high-dose psilocybin aimed at ego death1 onlyAnti-transition

Cross-traditional marker for criterion 2: a divine name being repeated. Kirtan repeats Hare Krishna; dhikr repeats Allah; nembutsu repeats Namu Amida Butsu; simran repeats Waheguru; hesychasm repeats Jesus. If there is no name, there is probably no addressee.

Container beats technique. Jhāna inside a Visuddhimagga frame is folded back into dry insight and its effect is undone; jhāna as an end in itself, or inside a devotional cosmology, is pro-transition. Likewise psilocybin in ceremony with music, a guide and a group behaves differently from the same dose taken blindfolded and alone. The variable is not the technique but what surrounds it.

Renunciation is Splitting. Cut off the affliction so that it is as if it never existed — this is the Detached mechanism performed at high refinement and called liberation.

The Traditions’ Own Correction

Buddhism has made a version of this objection internally, repeatedly, which is some evidence the pattern is real rather than an artefact of the framework.

  • The arahant terminus. Canonically an arahant has completed the path; there is no further development. Buddhism explicitly describes a terminal state. Thresholds denies that a terminal state exists short of leaving the system.
  • The bodhisattva vow as re-installed fuel. A vow to liberate all beings is a deliberately unsatisfiable desire, engineered after cessation, aimed at an Other. In Thresholds terms this reinstalls both missing ingredients of strategic exhaustion. The Mahāyāna critique of the “selfish arahant” is a garbled version of the same complaint. Compare the Depression note: help others because their suffering is real even if meaning is not.
  • The ox-herding pictures. The eighth is the empty circle — self and ox both forgotten. The ninth returns to the source; the tenth enters the marketplace with helping hands. The tradition states outright that the empty circle is not the last picture, and that stopping there is a subtle attachment to emptiness. Thresholds and Zen agree about the error and disagree only about what to call it.
  • Three vehicles. Renunciation says cut off the affliction; transformation (tantric) says use the poison as the path; self-liberation says recognise the affliction as already free. Thresholds is a transformation model — mechanism mastery is “poison becomes medicine,” and the lion-hunter analogy in Information Processing Mechanisms is a tantric image. The framework is therefore most compatible with Vajrayāna and least compatible with self-liberation traditions, whose claim is that no work on the affliction is necessary.

Differential Diagnosis

False positive: Seminal

A centerless practitioner presents with purposeful communication, no need for validation, absence from public pontification, consistent chosen phrasing, and apparent deadness of the Big Other.

Discriminators:

  • Boredom valence. For a Seminal, boredom is the symptom — an itch, the problem of having nothing left to want. The centerless practitioner experiences the same condition as the solution.
  • Relation to the Big Other. A Seminal buried it and can still speak in its memory or honour. The Detached practitioner never had it. Probe for grief, obligation, or shame that is not immediately reframed as arising-and-passing.
  • Mechanism inventory. Seminal structure has Repression and Disavowal in hand. Test for the ability to hold two contradictory commitments in productive tension, for Anxiety in the Neurotic sense, or for a playable Fantasy/Reality distinction. Detached structure has none of these stably.

False positive: Depression (Crisis of Psychotic)

“Nothing means anything and that’s oddly liberating” is also an excellent description of contemplative equanimity.

Proposed discriminator: Derealization’s version is perceptual (reality is constructed, nothing is solid); Depression’s version is semantic (meaning is constructed, nothing matters). Centerlessness proper — collapse of the observer — falls on the Derealization side. Realisation of the emptiness of phenomena falls closer to Depression. A practitioner reporting both may be later than they first appear.

The general pattern

Refinement of an earlier mechanism to its limit produces surface indicators of a later structure. The reliable discriminators are not phenomenological but relational: direction of elaboration, and stance toward the Big Other.

Predictions

  1. Container divergence. Among long-term practitioners with matched technique and duration, those embedded in lineage/sangha/teacher relationships should rate at later structures than solitary practitioners.
  2. Solo vs. group in devotional practice. The same prediction from the other direction: the “forces others to respond” criterion cannot be met alone, so solitary devotional practice should underperform collective practice for the DerealizationBipolar transition.
  3. The counterintuitive one. For a Derealization-phase Detached person, losing the attainment and falling into ordinary attached devotional religiosity is progress; stable centerless equanimity is stasis. A sangha would read the first as backsliding. Thresholds reads it as Bipolar or Dissociative onset.
  4. Convert cohorts. Adults who enter devotional communities should report a support failure or crisis in the preceding period. Cheap to check; would falsify the committal premise if absent.

Structure-Relativity

Nothing here is general advice. Every recommendation is indexed to a starting position.

  • Pro-transition from Derealization does not mean pro-transition generally. For someone already Psychotic — mid-Bipolar or Dissociative — devotional and absorptive practice is reinforcing, since their transition runs through Depression and requires seeing constructed unity as constructed. For them the equanimity practices are the useful ones.
  • The framework therefore predicts that a single sangha teaching one technique to a mixed room will systematically arrest half of it and advance the other half.
  • The crash is the mechanism, not a side effect. Proto-Foreclosure in Bipolar fails on schedule; that is how it is trained. The “New Age Seeker” vignette in Bipolar — cycling through workshops, enlightenment followed by despair — is this path working, and it does not look like health from outside.

Scope of the Claim

Everything above is indexed to a single aim: increased capability. It carries no authority outside that aim. See Who This Is For.

A practice that reduces suffering while preventing progression is counterproductive relative to progression and may be entirely correct relative to some other goal — including goals this framework would regard as worthier than progression itself. Thresholds is a capability discipline, not an account of the good life, and it does not have the standing to tell anyone their life is going wrong.

There is a neat consequence of this for the case at hand. “Wanting to become more” is ingredient (a) of strategic exhaustion (Progression). The framework’s audience condition is its own mechanism. The person in stable centerless equanimity has removed the want that would make this framework apply to them — so it has nothing to say to them, and does not need to. This page describes a structural dynamic and issues no verdict.

Two things it is useful for:

  • Diagnostic. If someone reports arriving at equanimity and finding that ambitions, projects and relationships quietly stopped mattering — and they mind that — this page names what happened and points at the ingredient that was removed.
  • Selection. Someone choosing a practice while holding developmental aims can now see that the choice has structural consequences, rather than treating all contemplative practice as one undifferentiated good.

Related distinction worth stating plainly: therapy reduces affliction; Thresholds increases capability. These are different objectives and they can conflict. A therapist doing excellent work with a Crisis-phase Neurotic may be relieving precisely the pressure that would move them. Neither party is doing anything wrong; they are optimising different things. claude-synthesis

What remains genuinely open is the dominance question — whether later structures are more capable or merely differently capable. If progression involves real trade-offs, then even for capability-seeking readers the recommendations here need re-specifying as capability at what. See Epistemic Status. open-problem
